Weekly Photo Roundup: November 19 2017

Every weekend I will post photos collected from various NCI graduate students and staff. Please enjoy this glimpse into our everyday lives here in the North Cascades.

It’s that time of the year where the precip rolls in and you either embrace it, or settle down inside for learning and traditions. Graduate students in the M.Ed Residency are currently doing a little bit of both as the days get shorter, and the sky a bit grayer.

Taking advantage of the season’s first heavy snowfall, graduate students in the 17th Cohort made their way to Mt. Baker during the weekend for a celebratory snowshoe. Woohoo to Snowvember!

They toasted trail hot cocoa to another successful year of snowpack. Some even went skiing on Mt. Baker – one of the reasons why they were drawn to the North Cascades in the first place. Below are photos from their adventure.

Students also noticed the changing mood of the Skagit River now that rain is upon us. Water levels are high, and the river looks cold and less enticing than it did in the summer, like during the heat of the Place-based Learning canoeing trip.

During the school week, they engaged in their Leadership and Nonprofit Administration course with Executive Director and co-founder of North Cascades Institute, Saul Weisberg with assistance from Aly Gourd, Graduate Outreach Assistant and alumna from the 15th Cohort. Through participating in the behind-the-scenes operations of NCI, students learn about nonprofit fundraising, organizational development, finance, program management, marketing and operations.

Graduate students also began their winter Curriculum Design coursework with Lindsey McDonald, Graduate Program Coordinator.

In the photos above, Cohort 17 brainstorms “What is Environmental Education?” Through this course, they will engage in curriculum design theory by creating lesson plans and curriculum projects in an area of environmental education.

Last but not least, this weekend multiple generations of students from the Graduate M.Ed Residency went to a contra dance in Bellingham, and had a blast! It has become a tradition thanks to Joshua Porter, the Graduate Program Director.

We hope you are getting out there and exploring, too, and have your own traditions to engage in this winter. Click here to see previous Photo Roundups!
